For 60 years, the Government has allowed the use of 1080 pesticide as a means of trying to protect our forest throughout NZ.
Although there has been strong opposition by some to try and stop use of 1080 aerial drops and for public to be better informed, it continues to be used.
The ongoing use and impact 1080 has on Māori food and medicine in forests has also become of concern to Māori.
Clyde Graff says the problem is caused by the Government and Regional Councils continuing to permit 1080 aerial drops in forests and waterways.
According to Mr Clyde, “Waikato Regional Council is issuing non notified consents to drop 1080 across the forest and into the waterways.”
Despite the evidence of direct impact 1080 has on forests and wildlife, it ultimately remains the Government's choice on how to best protect our forests from pests.
