Police have confirmed an 11-year-old boy who has been named as Connor Brian Phillips from Reporoa died in a hunting incident in Kaingaroa Forest yesterday.
According to the Police an adult member of the hunting party the boy is believed to have been with was unloading a firearm at the end of the hunt when the incident occurred.
A scene examination was conducted yesterday and a number of people are still being spoken to in regards to the investigation.
A post mortem is expected to be carried out today and police say they will be making no further comment until the conclusion of their investigation.
