Preparations have commenced for the 150th year anniversary of the battle at Gate Pā in Tauranga.
Men, women and children from Tauranga Moana attended to show their support, with the hope of making it a day to remember.
A special haka was composed for the occasion, which tells the history and significance of the battle of Pukehinahina.
According to Awanui Black, “It's an opportunity for the performers who will be participating in the welcome to practice, the performers that will be on the battle field, and chosen ones will be the face of the Tauranga.”
In less then 48 hours, hundred's will converge on to Pukehinahina to pay homage to those who fought 150 years ago. But for now, local Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāti Pūkenga, will continue their preparations for the big day on Tuesday.
