200th kiwi released back into wilderness

The Maungataniwha Kiwi Project in the Hawke's Bay is celebrating a huge milestone in reaching the release of its 200th kiwi back into the wild. Our cameras were there to capture the moment of one of our most endangered birds.

This is no ordinary cardboard box, inside it holds very precious cargo.

His name is Tānekaha, and he's the 200th kiwi chick to be released back into the wild here at Maungataniwha.

He has every chance of surviving with a healthy 900gm weight, he'll be strong award to defend himself against stoats and other predators he will face.

Lynda Holswich was given the lucky task of naming him, a name inspired from her boss who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Eight years ago, this bushland was silent, no birds to be heard.  But all that has changed now with around 35 kiwi chicks produced per season adding to the abundance of birdlife.
