Ngāti Ruapani head to Supreme Court over water rights

At the end of the month, the Supreme Court will consider an application from Ngāti Ruapani in Waikaremoana regarding their water rights.

The application will be considered at a hearing on whether Government sale of shares in state power companies would quash any chance of water claimants getting justice.

Although the NZ Māori Council had opposed Ngāti Ruapani getting intervener status, it has invited Ruapani to put in written submissions before the hearing, and it will hear from its lawyer if it considers it would be assisted by oral submissions.

Ngāti Ruapani, Kahungunu and Tūhoe were granted ownership of Waikaremoana's lake bed, the water of which feeds into Genesis dams.

Ngāti Ruapani fears that if Genesis follows Mighty River Power and half of its shares are sold, the Government will be unable to compensate the iwi.

Ngāti Ruapani is awaiting a Waitangi Tribunal report on its claims over ownership.
