Napier museum to house Māori relics

In Napier, for the first time in 22 years, 120 ancient Māori relics will be re-housed in the Napier Museum as part of the museum's million dollar redevelopment project.

Around 30 exhibition technicians from across the country have been bought in to help bring the 'Ūkaipō - O Tātou Whakapapa' showcase to life.

Handling with care is the key when it comes to preserving ancient Māori artefacts and the museum are taking all the necessary precautions.

It's been almost three years in the planning to pull off this mammoth task and it's expected around 2000 people will attend the special dawn opening ceremony next week.

Aroha Treacher takes us behind the scenes of this very special and significant collection of Māori treasures.
