From third division to first Pt Chevalier Pirates are on top

The Pt Chevalier Pirates have dominated the Appliance Shed Fox Memorial rugby league competition, for the last two seasons winning back-to-back titles.

The team is currently at the top of the table with the Papakura Sea Eagles and the Mt Albert Lions, all on 10 points.

This year they have taken their training and preparation to the next level.

Even though the side is at the top, they are still training hard.

Dylan Moses (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kurī) says, "The main thing this season is getting down here at the HPU centre at Les Mills, we haven't really done it in the last couple of years.  We are looking to get that edge so we can hopefully make it three in a row."

It seems the hard work is paying off.

Conditioning coach Paul McAuslin, "Coming into this part of the season from the games that I've seen, they're really standing out with their fitness more than anything else and their strength."

"Just when it comes to those tough situations in games we usually have a bit more in the engine to keep us going and we've won our last three games and we've scored fifty points or more," says Arden McCarthy (Ngati Raukawa, Rangitāne).

This culture was instilled in the team by a Warriors great who lifted them from the third division.

"From third division to first division in four years - dream come true."

The club currently holds all 6 trophies in the premier grade and are looking to retain them into the future.

Moses says, "The senior group that has been there for the last three or four years, this is probably our last season at Pt Chev."

On Saturday, they host the Ōtāhuhu Leopards, where they will defend the Roope Rooster Trophy.
