Telecommunications provider Chorus and the Ministry of Education will get broadband into as many as 50,000 homes which are currently not connected.
The ministry will identify households in need of the connection for educational purposes and is negotiating with internet service providers about the cost of data packages.
It could take several weeks to get the connections into homes.
