Northland Hapū who marched from Cape Reinga to Te Tii Marae in Waitangi were joined by a range of supporters and got a loud and clear message across to the Prime Minister, John Key during his pōhir
Hapū members stood on either side of John Key’s contingent with large placards chanting a clear message against deep sea drilling in their rohe.
A strong security and police presence before, during and after the Prime Ministers arrival ensured the majority of people were kept at bay during the pōhiri.
This didn’t deter hapū members however who continued to express their concerns throughout the karanga.
The Prime Ministers contingent was escorted directly into the whare at Te Tii where it is expected more concerns will be raised by local kaumātua.
Key and Minister of Treaty Settlements Chris Finlayson are expected to address the Iwi Leaders Forum later this afternoon
