The Battle of Rangiriri

Last Wednesday marked the 150th commemoration year of when the Battle of Rangiriri took place in Waikato-Tainui.

And as a result of the land wars 1.2 million acres of Waikato-Tainui land was confiscated by the Crown.

There were also casualties at the Battle of Rangiriri from both sides and many Māori were captured and imprisoned.

So to commemorate the battle, over 300 Māori played a part in the ceremonial welcome.

Although Waikato-Tainui signed their Treaty Settlement in 1995, the event was also a time to remember the efforts of their ancestors, to look back at the economical position they held before the Crown's confiscation campaign, as Waikato Tainui move forward in to the future.
