Black Caps to play as 'Aotearoa' in upcoming one-day international

The Black Caps will have 'Aotearoa' printed on their playing uniforms for this Sunday's one-day international against Zimbabwe in Harare.

The words 'New Zealand' will be replaced with 'Aotearoa' to mark the final day of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

New Zealand Cricket has also used its NZ Post sponsorship of junior cricket to translate its resources for schools into te reo Māori.

The organisation consulted senior Māori MPs about putting 'Aotearoa' on the players' shirts. At this stage it is just a one-off move, however, there could be the chance of it being repeated in the future.

Ngāi Tahu Black Cap Trent Boult, alongside Matt Henry, James Neesham and Ish Sodhi and White Fern player Natalie Dodd have all recorded messages in te reo Maori to encourage new Maori players.

It is believed that this is the first for any mainstream sport.
