Police have named the 14-year-old boy who died after a quad bike accident in Kaikohe, he was Robert (also known as Robbie) McKenzie.
Police say the bike apparently rolled into a ditch and trapped the boy. A family member found him and took him to a medical centre in Kaikohe.
When they arrived the centre was closed, but ambulance staff arrived and carried out CPR for some time before he was pronounced dead.
The death has been referred to the Coroner and WorkSafe New Zealand is also investigating.
