Cabinet signs off Ture Whenua Māori Bill

Cabinet has signed off the Ture Whenua Māori Bill.

The reform allows Māori land owners to utilise their land according to their aspirations, while ensuring appropriate safeguards for the retention of Māori land as a taonga tuku iho.

The submission of the Judges of the Māori Land Court argue that the bill reduces the right of access through the Māori Land Court.

The judges also argue that there is actually no safeguards in the partitioning of Māori land by way of majority owners.  This could see the alienation of whenua tupuna from minority owners.

Today, Te Kāea spoke to Minister for Māori Development, Te Ururoa Flavell regarding the Bill.
