The Māori Party is backing a call by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE) for urgent action to be taken to protect the long-finned eel from extinction.
Dr Pita Sharples says a ban on the commercial fishing of eels is a good first step. This comes as no surprise to many iwi around the country who have been urging Govt to take better care of lakes, rivers and waterways.
