Carrington cruises into K1 500m final at World Championships

Lisa Carrington of Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki has made her way into the K1 500m final at the Canoe Racing World Championships in Milan.

It was a tough day for our New Zealand paddlers, however Carrington once again stood out, winning her race in 1 minute 54.291 seconds, then going nearly 5 seconds faster to win her semi-final in 1:49.407.

She will now prepare for her K1 200m race tonight as she chases a historic world championship double.

Tonight will also see the New Zealand women's K4 in action, with Ngāti Raukawa's Jaimee Lovett, Kayla Imrie of Te Whakatohea, Caitlyn Ryan and Aimee Fisher vying for the gold medal position.

All four members are happy with their progress following six weeks of intensive overseas training.

Lovett says "We've had some really good sessions and every time we've got on the water, it was getting better every day.

"Even in the last week, we've managed to learn a bit more and go a little bit faster and all the fine-tuning is going really well. Everyone's feeling pretty positive and looking forward to racing."

Here's some images of her in Milan, with the Te Āitanga-a-Mahaki descendant qualifying for the K1 500m finals. Carrington says that her main goal is to take out the gold medal for the second time in a row.

She is also the reigning champ. You can watch the finals shortly on YouTube under ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.
