Chiefs secure win over Highlanders

The sound of the famous cow bell was heard throughout Waikato Stadium last night.

The Highlanders were the first to post points with a penalty in the early stages, but the Chiefs reply was swift, with quick hands allowing Nanai-Williams to score the opening try.

The Highlanders fought hard against their opponent’s forward line, allowing them to draw closer to the try line.

Just before half time, their loose forward John Hardie scored their first try of the match.

The Chiefs lifted their intensity in the second half.

Six minutes after the restart, Liam Messam added to the scoreboard following a break through bust by Tawera Kerr-Barlow.

Because of an obstruction mistake made by the Chiefs, they were penalised and Lima Sopoaga was successful to secure a penalty kick for the Highlanders.

The home side continued to move forward, and due to the extraordinary kick by the team's captain, Aaron Cruden, Charlie Ngātai scored a try in the right hand corner.

Despite the Highlanders striving to come out on top, previous winners of the Super Rugby competition, the Chiefs, dominated yet again.

21-19 was the final score.
