A child died as a result of a crash south of Whangārei last night.
Emergency services tried to revive the child at the scene of the crash at Mata on State Highway 1 but were unsuccessful.
Police closed the road and diverted traffic to alternative routes.
More information about the crash is to be provided by police in due course.
This comes after eight people died on the roads during Labour Weekend, the worst figure since 2011.
