Close clash for Counties-Manukau against Waicoa-Bay

There was almost an upset in day two of the NZRL National Youth Tournament being held in Rotorua at Puketāwhero Park.

Last year's champions Counties-Manukau Stingrays took on Waicoa Bay Colts in the U17s section.

The two teams took to the field with the Colts setting the scene early in the game.  However, it was the Stingrays who went over the line first.

Only 10 minutes in the game the hooker for the Stingrays was knocked unconscious; a huge blow for last year's champs.

Heading into half time, both teams had 10 points on the scoreboard.

But it was the second half that showcased the skills of both teams, and while the Stingrays had strong defence, the Colts dominated with speed and fitness.

The Stingrays maintained their lead, with the Colts nipping at the heels with only a two-point difference.

Final score: Counties-Manukau Stingrays 28, Waicoa Bay Colts 26.
