The Bay of Plenty Regional Council has received a formal application to leave the wreck of the Rena on the Astrolabe Reef from the Astrolabe Community Trust.
Local iwi have spoken out against debris being left in the water and want the wreckage to be removed.
The public will have until August 8 to have their say on the application, and a decision will be made thereafter.
