Communities from Canterbury to Wellington are living in the aftershocks of a 7.5 earthquake that struck overnight.
The earthquake happened just after midnight and struck close to Hanmer Springs in the South Island. Tremors were felt throughout the country, sparking a tsunami alert for coastal towns from Nelson to Banks Peninsula.
