Eastern Bay of Plenty groups promote Mental Health awareness week

Community groups in the Eastern Bay of Plenty who work in the field of mental illness today launched Mental Health awareness week by coming together for a day at Thornton beach.

Health coordinator, Emma Kutia says, "we have come together, the workers and families in this region, to celebrate the theme for today here at Thornton."

Eastern Bay of Plenty groups have given each day of the week a theme in making people aware of the importance of mental health.  Today’s theme is giving.

Mental Health Awareness Week is endorsed by the World Federation for Mental Health and is acknowledged in over 150 countries.  Around five community groups arrived at Thornton today covering the Ōpotiki, Whakatāne, Tāneatua, Kawerau and Murupara areas.

Emma Kutia says that, “For us, each person has a different outlook on the mind. We are all included in this. Some days we are happy, some days we aren't.”

Each day in the Eastern Bay of Plenty there are mini events happening today with a huge promotional event planned for this Friday.

Mental Health Awareness Week ends on Saturday, which is World Mental Health Day.
