The final resting place of Hera Te Upokoiri

Surrounded today by her descendants, the final resting place of Hera Te Upokoiri, who died at the age of 63, is nestled in the picturesque beauty of the Te Tua Vineyard.

The restoration of her headstone was a group effort between the Hunia family, Ngāti Apa, the Historic Places Trust and the vineyard owner. The new headstone is a mark of respect for someone of her character and illustrious lineage.

The original kahukiwi and taiaha gifted to her parents over 150 years ago as a wedding dowry were brought along by the family to mark the special occasion.

She had her portrait painted by Gottfried Lindauer in 1884, and with the new headstone now firmly in place, it will serve as a reminder to the strength of the woman who played a significant role in Māori history.
