Five people die on NZ roads over Queen's Birthday Weekend

The 5-year-old boy involved in a serious crash in Levin in the weekend has died in hospital last night. The child's death brings the road toll death to 5.

The holiday weekend road toll officially ended at 6am this morning.

Last year, five people were killed on New Zealand roads and dozens more were seriously injured  in crashes around the country.

Police say while this year's statistics were slightly lower the figures are a “tragic departure from the equivalent weekend in 2013 when no one died."

Over the holiday period, Police enforced a reduced 4km/h speed threshold and all drivers stopped were breath-tested, regardless of the time of day or night.
