Flavell questions Pora's payout

Māori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell is questioning whether $2mil is sufficient compensation for Teina Pora who was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned.

In a press conference, this afternoon, Justice Minister Amy Adams confirmed that Cabinet has approved the compensation for Pora. The base rate for compensation in wrongful conviction cases is $100,000 a year. Pora spent 22 years in prison.

In March 2015, the Privy Council quashed his convictions for the 1992 rape and murder of Susan Burdett. Pora's compensation is the largest ever payout by the Crown.

Māori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell, “It's difficult to say whether $2mil is right for a 22-year prison sentence. However, that's the judge's decision so it's final.”
