Getting leaner & meaner in 2016

As many of us return to our workplaces this week, along with it comes Christmas and New Year's food hangover.  But one rugby club in Wellington think they've found a cure, providing motivation to the public to get leaner and meaner in 2016.

They jumped, ran, and stretched their bodies, in the hope of dropping those extra Christmas pounds.

At Oriental-Rongotai Rugby club, they're big on encouraging the Miramar community to get active, using free group fitness classes as motivation. Trainer Tuga Mativa says people of all ages and backgrounds are joining in.

Coach Tuga Mativa says, "Pacific Island and Māori need motivation from the peers, like if she's doing it I want to do it.  It's great to have us all here motivating each other."

The Mental Health Foundation recommends those feeling stressed, should participate in activities like this.  It may be able to banish the back-to-work blues.

Mativa says, "When I started training, I wasn't the biggest fulla but I had someone encouraging me so it's good to see all of our family down here an giving it a go."

So for those of us wanting to tick off those New Year resolutions, this could be just what the doctor ordered.
