Government supports establishing Māori wards in local councils

The closing time and date for submissions on dumping ratepayers' vetos over Māori wards was today at 5pm.

The government is supporting councils working to increase representation for Māori in local government, by using the same rules to establish Māori wards as general wards for the 2022 local elections. Since 2002, 24 councils have attempted to establish Māori wards, mostly unsuccessfully.
