Greater input for Te Arawa Māori in Council decisions

The process has started for Te Arawa to have a greater say on issues in Rotorua and the Rotorua District Council.  It is something that Māori Member of Parliament of Waiariki, Te Ururoa Flavell is supporting.

Te Ururoa Flavell states, “In the years gone by the board that was set up for Te Arawa, had no real power, no teeth from the council’s view, why do I say that, because they did not heed any decision made by that board.”

A new Te Arawa board to replace the current Te Arawa Standing committee will be formed.  The new board which could be in operation by July will have no hold by the council

The members of this new Te Arawa board will be allowed to sit on council committees giving Te Arawa a greater voice on issues in Rotorua.

There are 23,400 Māori that live in Rotorua, this is the fourth biggest Māori population in New Zealand. The key message here is what's good for Māori is good for New Zealand.
