Gubb to honour grandfather in Anzac Day match

Round 8 of the NRL marks the return of the Anzac Day match tradition. The Warriors will travel to Melbourne for the Anzac Day encounter with the Storm at AAMI Park were Warriors Charlie Gubb of Ngai Tahu will honour his grandfather, the late Laurence Gubb who served in the 6th Field Ambulance of the 25th Battalion in World War II.

Gubb says, "My grandad went to war, he was like a specialist. It will be cool, I have never played an Anzac game and I know I will be just thinking about all those people."

The Gubb family own and operate a family business in the footwear industry called Gubbs Shoe Fashions which is located on Wakefield Street, Wellington.

Photos of the late Laurence are hanging in the store to acknowledge the great man he was to the many locals of Wellington.

“We have got one photo of him sitting on his rocker because he came back. We still have all his medals at home,” says Gubb.

Gubb is one of three forwards named on the bench face Storm alongside Jacob Lillyman and Ligi Sao. The young pro hopes to get some quality minutes under his belt against a formidable Storm forward pack which includes former NZ Māori players Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor.

"I guess it be like the modern-day war now just us out on the field", says Gubb.

The clash marks the seventh Anzac Day clash between the sides dating back to 2009.
