Paramount Pictures' use of the haka in its new Fast and Furious movie is raising a few eyebrows.
Promoted by Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock, an online clip from the movie showing young girls performing the haka at a sports game has hit social media.
Te Arawa kapa haka exponent Tukiterangi Curtis says it appears the haka is treated with dignity and the girls are performing actions in an orderly fashion without mocking or degrading the haka but he does query the reason why it is included in the film. He believes it is crucial the relevance of the haka is incorporated in any script.
