After a five-year hiatus the biennial Tūhoe festival, Te Hui Ahurei a Tūhoe, is set to return over Easter weekend.
The Hui Ahurei is the longest running iwi festival in Aotearoa. It marked its 50th year in 2021 but those celebrations have been pushed back till now.
Martin Rakuraku is the chairman of the local organising committee in Waimana, which will host this year's Ahurei.
Waipuketia ki te Aroha (Flood them with love) was the name of a popular event in Rotorua this last weekend.
Fresh back from Te Matatini all six Te Arawa kappa haka teams took to the stage again at Kouramawhitiwhiti (the Rotorua lakefront) to perform to a crowd of 3000-plus.
The event raised well over $30,000 in five hours to donate to whānau in Te Tai Rāwhiti and Ngāti Kahungunu affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Trevor Maxwell from Te Kapaha o Ngāti Rangiwewehi and Watu Mihinui from Te Kapahaka o Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao led the festival.
Six Te Arawa kapa haka made it to Te Matatini this year and five of them made it into the top 12 finalists. Now they have returned home to raise pūtea for whānau affected by Cyclone Gabrielle in Te Tai Rāwhiti and Ngāti Kahungunu on Sunday at Te Kouramāwhitiwhiti (the Rotorua lakefront).
It will be a day for whānau to gather, a chance to connect with Māori culture and a time to give gratitude and assist those that who support and aid the most.
Te Matatini and Ngāti Whātua have welcomed the mahau that adorns the stage to Ngā Ana Wai this morning marking nine days before the start of the beleaguered kapa haka competition.
Despite the heavy rain and strong wind caused by Cyclone Gabrielle the giant structure, which has been a fixture of Te Matatini since 2013, was blessed at dawn by karakia.

Women inmates from Auckland Region Women's Corrections Facility have been training for the inter-prison Kapa Haka competition for over two months.

In September last year, organisers cancelled Te Mana Kuratahi after some regions, including Waikato, were moved into alert level 3. That meant a new round of regional qualifying competitions in 2022. Te Tauihu retains hosting rights for Te Mana Kuratahi in 2023.
