Hamilton Girls' High School wins NZ Touch tournament

48 high schools from around country took part in the New Zealand secondary school touch nationals held in Papakura over the weekend. Hamilton Girls' High School and first-time finalist Columba College from Dunedin went head to head in the girl's finals.

It was 5 years ago, Hamilton Girl's won the women’s division. This year they were in it to win it.

They were the first to get points on the board, weaving their way to a good lead.

But visitors Columba were hot on their heels, keeping the points close.

It was goal for goal for most of the first half, until Hamilton girls got this break, pushing them two points ahead.

The second half got off to a slow start for both teams, letting the game get the best of them. But the Dunedin girls got it together and went for it.

Colbumba's skill and agility wasn't enough to knock the Hamilton girls off the leader board. In the end, Columba came agonisingly close going down 8-7.

Hylan Potts / Tainui, Ngāti Raukawa says, “We wanted to just stick to what we came here to do, despite the level of player we played that was our main goal.”

Their next goal is to return next year and maintain their current title.
