Hawaiian documentary follows inspirational transgender

The documentary traces Hina Wong Kalu's evolution from the timid young boy Collin Wong, to her present position as a respected teacher in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

It's not easy for a “mahu” (Transgender) to find love, but the film offers a touching insight into the love journey of Hina and her marriage to her Tongan husband and the trials and tribulations they face.

The film shines the spotlight on gender diversity, aiming for new understanding and perspectives, empowering those facing harassment or discrimination in their society.

Following the release of this documentary, Hina has set a new challenge for herself by running for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, making her the first openly-transgender candidate to run for a state-wide political office in the United States.
