He Pī Ka Rere keeping tamariki active in early childhood centres

Keeping active and thinking sharp has proven to be a huge success for children in early childhood centres, through an initiative called 'He Pī Ka Rere' run by Toi Tangata and He Oranga Poutama.

Darrio Penetito-Hemara from He Oranga Poutama and Toi Tangata came up with the idea of introducing traditional learning for young learners three years ago.

Puawairua Te Kōhanga Reo is one of 30 early childhood centres from Auckland that undertake cultural aspects of learning under the guidance of the Ministry of Health.  This will benefit their learning before leaving this facility.

They are given nine practise sessions, including planting food.

The He Pi Ka Rere programme hopes to expand this internationally.
