High profile Māori women to discuss domestic violence and Chris Brown

In the wake of debate surrounding hip-hop star Chris Brown, the National Urban Maori Authority (NUMA) will hold a press conference today to address the singers proposed visit to New Zealand.

NUMA says five high profile Māori women will talk about domestic violence and Chris Brown.

A statement released by Dame Tariana Turia said she would support an application by Chris Brown to enter the country. She said “The case of hip-hop artist Chris Brown provides an interesting opportunity for us to have the debate about our attitudes towards rehabilitation of offending, particularly in the context of violence.”

It follows Tainui spokesperson Tukoroirangi Morgan confirming to Te Kaea that Tainui would consider extending an invite if the pop star was granted entry to New Zealand.

On behalf of the National Urban Maori Authority, Dame June Mariu, Dame June Jackson, Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi, Lady Tureiti-Moxon, and Former New Zealand’s Woman's Refuge CEO Merepeka Raukawa-Tait will speak at the press conference this afternoon.

The group will be supported by other women who work in domestic violence and Whānau Ora in the Urban Maori Authorities.
