At the Napier High Court, 31-year-old Hugh Hemi Tuatua Tareha was sentenced to 12 years and nine months in prison for the violent sexual assault of an 87-year-old woman and later the same day, indecently assaulting another 73-year-old woman back in 2013 in Hastings.
Crimes that left the elderly community afraid in their own homes.
Tareha must now serve the total sentence with no parole but once released, he will have a 10-year supervision order imposed upon him.
It was noted in court that he was on parole at the time of the attacks and that morning Tareha consumed alcohol and smoked synthetic cannabis, which the court heard spurred his schizophrenia leading him to attack his elderly victims.
Tareha has shown no remorse or empathy for his elderly victims.
