Hundreds converge at Tūrangawaewae Marae to remember loved ones

Hundreds waited outside the gates of the Tūrangawaewae marae this morning, carrying with them photos of their loved ones who have passed within the year.

Throughout that time, Māoridom has lost many prominent leaders within respective iwi.  They have been acknowledged this morning.

Erima Henare, Tama Huata, Apirana Mahuika, Nanny Uru McGarvey, Eru Thompson and Mauriora Kīngi are just a few who's names have been mentioned in whaikōrero.

Tainui's Rahui Papa opened this morning's proceedings by acknowledging the different iwi who have come from near and far to be at today's occasion.  He also paid his respects, on behalf of Tainui waka, to those who have died this week.

Paraone Gloyne of Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Maniapoto stood soon after Papa and spoke of the number of deaths te ao Māori has faced in a short space of time.  As well as speaking of the deceased, Paraone also spoke of the nature of rangatahi Māori in the modern day and noted that many of them are turning a blind eye to things such as attending tangihanga and maintaining their tikanga and reo.

Like yesterday, the pōhiri is expected to continue until this afternoon.

Today marks day two of the Koroneihana for 2015 and despite the unfortunate weather throughout the past two days, the masses continue to make their way to the marae.

An expo tent has also been set up on site showcasing the work of different service providers within Tainui.  A separate tent has also been set up as a place where parents can take their children to play and get involved in various activities.

Tonight, there will be more entertainment inside Kimiora, this also includes the show called "Ngā Whetū Kōhiko".
