If gay marriage is legalised, will it increase crime rates?

Last year, some NZ celebrities rallied together in support of the Gay Marriage Proposal bill.

But the head of the Sensible Sentencing Trust says if gay people like Alison Mau and Tamati Coffey are allowed to marry, crime rates would rise.

In his submission to the bill's Select Committee, Garth McVicar says the bill has the ability to destroy the good work done to reduce crime, and will have a detrimental effect on crime at all levels.

Director of child advocacy group, Te Mana Ririki, Anton Blank, says the children of gay couples he knows of are well rounded and respectful individuals.

A report on the public submissions is due to be completed by February 28.
