International Children of Prisoners Week

They're often forgotten about by society, but this week, their faces are being thrust into the spotlight.

This week is International Children of Prisoners Week, and being launched today in Parliament is an exhibition featuring many of those faces.

Seen are some of the faces of children of prisoners throughout the world.

Although there aren't any faces from NZ featured in this exhibition, experts say it's still a huge problem here.

50% of NZ's prison population are Māori.  The group, Ka Pou Whakahou say they can provide support for Māori who are affected.

One of the initiatives that Pou Whakahou implements is a mentor for those children in need, to give them a helping hand when most needed.

It's hoped that through these kinds of programmes, the cycle of re-offending will end so that Māori may have a better chance at succeeding in the future.
