Kaikoura pāua hang in the balance

A decision on whether or not to save millions of pāua stranded along the east coast of the South Island is imminent.

Scientists were flown into Kaikoura today to assess the extent of the damage to marine life caused by last week's earthquake.

The minister of MPI imposed a three-month ban on the taking of any kaimoana.

Volunteers agreed to stop relocating pāua today to allow scientists to carry out their assessments, which are expected to be completed in the next few hours.

The reports will help MPI determine whether or not recovery efforts can or should continue.
