Kī-o-rahi ā-iwi tournament to be held in Tūrangi next month

Te Papa Tākaro o Te Arawa worker Stephen Te Moni is looking forward to the kī-o-rahi ā-iwi tournament and says there are a number of tribes competing.

Stephen Te Moni says, “The tribes competing are from Ngāpuhi, Te Arawa, the Whanganui area and also Wellington.  There will be women's and men's teams attending the tournament hosted by Tūwharetoa.”

This year marks the fourth time Tūwharetoa sports have held the event in Tūrangi.

Te Moni says the hope is to build the game, “It's hard to organise some of the teams that have to travel a long distance like Ngāpuhi, which takes about 10 hours on a bus, however it's awesome to see their dedication to the sport.”

The competition will take place in Tūrangi next Saturday starting from 10am onwards.
