Manuera Tohu, an esteemed orator of Ngāti Toro, Te Popoto and Te Ihutai has passed away.

Mr. Tohu passed away at his Dargaville home yesterday.

Anglican Minister John Marsden told Te Kāea that Mr. Tohu was heavily involved in the construction of Kapehu Marae in the Kaipara District and he had lived in the Dargaville area for many years.

Mr. Tohu was a trustee of Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust and a former minister of Te Ratana Faith who turned to the Wesleyan Church recently. He was also a kaumātua advisor for The New Zealand Police.

In 2003, he was awarded a Queen's Service Medal in recognition as a master of oratory and as a tireless community worker.

In 2012 at the signing of Te Rarawa's Treaty Deed of Settlement, Mr. Tohu expressed his intention to have Te Ihutai's lands returned to the hapū.

Mr. Tohu's funeral is expected to take place at Kapehu Marae, Mititai in the Kaipara Region.
