Labour MP for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti Meka Whaitiri is accusing the Māori Party of not doing enough to lobby the government about the low home-ownership rates of tāngata whenua in Auckland.
Ikaroa-Rāwhiti MP Meka Whaitiri is sticking to her guns. She says, "It's about affordable homes and Kiwis have a desire who work and save and who want to purchase their own home, should have that right to do that in their own country."
Her objection came after Māori Party co-leader Marama Fox criticised Labour's claims about how many offshore Chinese were buying homes in Auckland.
Labour Party were accused of racial profiling. Whaitiri says, "Racism is not desirable in any content."
The figures showed that 40% of home buyers over three months had Chinese surnames.
"Kiwis are prised outside of the market because we have overseas speculators coming into this country," says Whaitiri.
Meka Whaitiri says the Māori Party and the Government are doing nothing to address the woeful Māori home ownership rates in Auckland.
Whaitiri says, "This government is asleep at the wheel."
