Lion Foundation Netball Champs kicks off in Auckland

Today, the Lion Foundation Netball Champs started in Auckland, where 14 teams from around the country will be fighting for top honours.

This competition has been going for almost 90 years and is a grade just below the ANZ Championships which attracts the best players in NZ.

More than 150 top netball players from around the country will be playing their hardest at the Trusts Arena in Auckland this week.

They're all hoping to make the finals this Friday when the championship trophy will be up for grabs.

Otago are the current titleholders, winning it in 2012 and 2013.

They looked to start off strong, playing Kapi Mana in their first game this week.

Te Paea Selby Rickitt says, “Our aim is to win it again for the third time, that would be really good for us, but we're just focussing on every game as it comes.  Hopefully we'll make the finals on Friday.”

Kapi Mana wasn't about to let them win easily.  In their team was Silver Fern Katarina Cooper and Elias Shadrock from the Central Pulse.

Thames Valley have been missing from this competition for 15 years, but this year they're back with 12 players.

With the amount of talent on show today, there's no doubt all teams will be wanting to make the finals on Friday.
