Lisa Carrington wins Gold at Rio Olympics

Lisa Carrington (Te Aitanga a Māhaki, Ngāti Porou) has claimed the Gold Medal in the K1 200m race at the Rio Olympics.

Carrington powered through the race finishing in 39.864 seconds.

While she was a force to be reckoned with, she was faced with a challenge by the silver medalist Marta Walczykiewicz of Poland who finished in 40.279 seconds, followed closely by Inna Osypenko-of Azerbaijan who claimed the bronze in 40.401 seconds.

Whanau and friends of Carrington made the medal ceremony extra special for the talented sportswoman by performing the haka.

Carrington maintains her Olympic title after taking Gold for the K1 200m race at the London Olympics in 2012, she is also the current title holder of many other world championships.

Next on the cards for Carrington is the K1 500m race later today.

In sailing Sam Meech has claimed a Bronze medal for New Zealand.

The current tally of New Zealand medals sits at 10.
