Local artists to bring colour to Manukau Police cells

Local artists are set to work their magic on Manukau Police cells later this month.

Ten people were chosen to paint their winning design following a competition in December last year.

Minister of Police, Hon Judith Collins, and local Kaumatua Brownie Rauwhero were a part of the panel of judges and selected the winning designs.

Artists include students from Papatoetoe High School, a police officer and as well as novice artists.

Inspector Tracy Phillips came up with the idea. She says, “We want to make a better environment for the staff who work in the District Custody Unit and for those who unfortunately end up spending time there.”

“Artists have come up with inspirational paintings which reflects the diverse community of Counties Manukau.

We hope while people are in our care, they can have time to reflect in an environment which shows that someone cares about them.”

The initiative is part of a larger project in the cells, where Counties Manukau Police have set up a library of donated books.

This is to give detainees something constructive to do while they are waiting.

All of the artwork is expected to be completed by mid-May.
