Lost medal finally makes its return home

A medal that belonged to a Northern chief which was lost in Australia for more than 200 years ago, will now be returned to New Zealand.

The medal caused a huge out break of Māori haka protesting against it being auctioned sold for more than $300,000.

After 208 years, this silver medal presented to Ngāpuhi chief Te Pahi by Governor Philip King will now return to New Zealand shores after it resurfaced in Australia.

Te Pahi was highly regarded in New South Wales by many European settlers and was a very influential Māori chief in Australia.

His interest in British law and technology made for an adventurous chief. Now his descendants can bask in his glory too.

Thanks to the efforts of Te Papa Tongarewa and Tāmaki Paenga Hira the medal was purchased and can safely return home.

A decision hasn't been made in terms of where the medal will be housed yet, and a shared guardianship relationship will be arranged between the two museums and descendants of Te Pahi.
