Mālama Honua voyage to promote more sustainable future

The voyage, Mālama Honua or "Care for the Earth", is estimated to take three years on its worldwide voyage across the oceans to grow the global movement toward a more sustainable future.

The Voyaging Waka Hokulea and Hikianalia are expected to sail this week, weather permitting, from American-Samoa to Tonga, before setting sail down under to Aotearoa. This will be its second visit for Hokulea.

As well as spreading the message about taking care of our environment, our oceans and our lands, the crew is building their experiences and knowledge about the traditional methods of sailing and navigation.

It's envisaged that the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage will arrive in New Zealand mid-November.

Māori Television's current affairs show, Te Tēpu will have more on this story tonight at 9:30pm.
