Man to appear in court charged with assaulting police officer

A 21-year-old man will appear in the Waitakere District Court this morning charged with aggravated wounding of a Waitakere Police Officer.

The man was the driver of a vehicle pulled over by police yesterday and when it was discovered his license had been suspended the officer attempted to arrest the individual.

While trying to handcuff the man, the officer was punched in the face and knocked out.

Police have labelled the assault as gutless and Inspector Steve Kose, Acting Area Commander says, “These two officers were in fact doing what we call 'prevention activies' - performing a high visibility patrol to deter criminals and keep our communities safe. An assault like this should not be seen by anyone as simply being part of a Police officer's job and I know the public will share their disgust at this"

The injured officer was taken to Waitakere Hospital, with possible concussion, facial and lower back injuries.
