Man arrested in relation to verbal abuse incident on Hutt Valley bus

A 66-year-old man has been arrested in the Hutt Valley in relation to an incident on the Valley Flyer bus service last week.

A video of the incident taken by another passenger on the bus was posted online and showed an elderly man shouting abuse at two men getting off the bus, telling them to ‘”go back to their own country.”

The tirade of verbal abuse was then redirected towards a woman who tried to settle him down and continued for quite some time.  The man hurled insults at the woman and threatened her with physical violence.

The man arrested by Hutt Valley police will appear in the Hutt Valley District Court on Tuesday where he will face charges in relation to the incident.

Hutt Valley Area Commander, Inspector Sean Hansen wishes to acknowledge and thank members of the local community who provided information that helped to identify the man.
