Police were called at 5.25am today after a man was seen with an axe outside Parliament.
The man had destroyed glass panels in the front doors into Parliament but did not attempt to enter.
Police took the man into custody at 5.35am.
The 31-year-old man is expected to appear in Wellington District Court this morning charged with intentional damage and possession of an offensive weapon.
